MACCABEAN GAMES,reader responds to recent article from JTA

July 16th, 2009 · No Comments

Dear JTA Reader,

Today marks the start of the 18th Maccabiah Games, the so-called Jewish Olympics held every four years in Israel. This year’s gathering has attracted some 8,000 Jewish athletes from more than 60 countries
……. I was sent a link by someone on the Maccabiah
games and it inspired me to respond. Please let me know what you think. (above is an excerpt from that link) I dont know if you are aware of this or not but the Maccabiah
games are named for Judas Maccabeas. I enjoy history very much.Am also an athelete.
and,I believe it can be a window to our future, and besides
chazzal teach us that history repeats itself disguised in form. I
have read the Book of Macabees before but I have been surprised how
few others have and how little they know about the Macabees and Judas
Macabeas. The Book of Macabees was written originally in Hebrew by a
Frum Jew but the only remaining copies we have are in greek. It was
not included by Chazzal to be holy but is considered to be
historically accurate. Many specific events in the book of Macabbes
are further elaborated on by Chazzal. All this withstanding I have
posted many verses of chapter 1 and part of chapter 2 to set the
context of the events and time period which surround the Macabees. I
am of the belief that we Klal Israel are in a simlair circumstances
today as we were then. And furthermore that there is already a war to
define who is a Jew and what it means to be a Jew. Back in the
Maccabean days this was true, during the spread of xtianity this was
true, and today it is true. In all of these periods we see an attempt
to assimlate the Jew into a foreign culture. I hope this gets you to
think a little and inspires you to ask questions and even challenge me
in my beliefs and views…
