ISAIAH“Console My people,console says Your G-d”

The following are verses mentioned by the holy prophet Isaiah and their commentaries in order to give encouragement to the Jewish people.

Chapter 40:

Verse 1: “Console My people, console says Your G-d”.

“Console, Console” In this verse G-d calls upon the prophets to console the Jews. The repetition means that they should repeatedly console them. G-d does not promise an immediate redemption, only the consolation of a distant salvation. At the moment they do not merit salvation. “Console My people,” this is a title of endearment that G-d always loves the Jews no matter what they have done. “Says” means to continue saying consolation throughout all future generations. “Your G-d” refers to the Hebrew Name of G-d of strict justice meaning that the Jewish People can be consoled even when Divine justice is being exacted upon them.

Verse 2: “Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call to her, for she is filled with her
hosts and her sin has been forgiven, because she has been punished doubly by
G-d for all her sins.”

“Speak to the heart of Jerusalem” The consolation can be short, and contain only a statement of the ultimate salvation, but such a consolation does not always calm someone who is deeply distressed. Therefore, the consolation is to be expressed in many different ways and with uplifting metaphors, so that it reaches the hearts of the people, calms their difficult feelings and allays their fears throughout the centuries of exile. “Jerusalem” The consolation is addressed to Jerusalem and the cities of Judah. Isaiah speaks about a rebuilt Jerusalem in the distant future, and encourages its residents that although Jerusalem will be destroyed an ever greater future awaits them and that the Jewish People’s future greatness will be centered around the city of Jerusalem.

 “Call to her” Call to those who are near and to those who are far. “Filled with her hosts” The phrase means that her time of suffering has ended. “Her sin has been forgiven” The people are guaranteed that one way or another, their sin will be forgiven. The ultimate destiny of the Jewish People is to become a holy nation and a role model for all mankind. Following their salvation they will realize that after a long exile, much suffering, and many trails that there is no sense in returning to the behavior which previously brought them all that suffering in the first place. “Punished … by G-d”

 Everything that happened to the Jews was from G-d it was not accidental. “Punished doubly for all her sins” The prophet warns here in G-d’s Name that the Jewish People’s suffering will be “double the pleasure” they derived from their sins, not only as a punishment but also to strengthen them spiritually, in order to assure the permanence of their future purity. The “double punishment” here can also be in comparison to the suffering of the nations.

As stated many times, what are considered minor and insignificant sins for the non-Jew can be considered major for a Jew, and thus the punishment for the Jews will be double compared with the non-Jew.

    When Will the Jewish Messiah Come? The Talmud Sanhedrin (97a) Says:

    Rebbe Yachanan said, “In the generation when the son of David (the Jewish Messiah), will come, the number of Torah scholars will dwindle, and as for the rest of the people, their eyes will be wearied through anguish and grief. Everyday will bring new adversities and harsh decrees. No sooner is one trouble over than another appears.

    Rebbe Yehuda said, In the generation when the son of David will come, … the Galilee will lay desolate (possibly referring to the Lebanon War 2006), the people of the border region will wander from town to town, and not be welcome (possibly referring to Gush Katif). The wisdom of the scholars will be unpopular; G-d fearing people will be despised, the leaders of the generation (non-Torah true leaders) will act the way dogs behave (the leaders will appear to be leading but they will actually lead based on public opinion), and the truth will have disappeared. … (In the generation when the son of David will come) Rav Sheila said, “Whoever turns away from evil will be considered foolish.”

    Rebbe Nehorai said, “In the generation when the son of David will come, the young will humiliate the elderly, yet the elderly will rise (respectfully) before the young. Daughters will rebel against their mothers; daughters-in-law against their mothers-in-law. The leaders of the generation will act like dogs act (the leaders will appear to be leading but they will actually lead based on public opinion), and a son will not be ashamed before his father.”

    Rebbe Nechemiah said, “In the generation when the son of David will come, impudence will increase; mutual respect (among people) will decrease. The vine will produce its fruit, yet wine will be expensive. The world will be converted to heresy, and there will be no one to admonish the people.”

    The Sages taught, “G-d will take up the cause of His people (and redeem them) (Deut. 32:36)” when He sees that their power is gone, and there is no leader or helper. The son of David will come, when informers abound (when the informers become too successful G-d will bring the redemption (Rashi)).

    Rebbe Abba said, There is no clearer sign of the arrival of the (Jewish) Messiah than this, as it says, “But you, O mountains of Israel, will give forth your branch and bear your fruit for My people Israel” (Ezekiel 36:8). (The clearest sign that the redemption is imminent is that the land of Israel will produce abundance of fruit (Rashi)

    Rebbe Yochanan said, If you see a generation that slides into poverty, expect the Messiah, as it says, “And the impoverished nation You will save” (2 Samuel 22:28).
