President Obama’s poll numbers have taken a turn for the worse following a widely regarded failure at his opening presidential debate last week against contender Mitt Romney, the Democratic party will be looking towards vice President Joe Biden to bring them some good news as he faces off against a formidable foe in Congressman Paul Ryan.

27 years dividing them in age as one marked contrast between the contenders, they are viewed quite differently in their public personas as well. Biden is considered to be compassionate with an ability to connect with voters but is known to be spontaneous, which has sometime landed him in trouble. Ryan is one of Washington’s better known policy wonks and has repeatedly shown an impressive command of policy related subject matter in debates and House Committee sessions.  READ MORE

WASHINGTON (AP) — Anyone who paid attention to a hearing in Congress this week knew that the administration had been implored to beef up security at the U.S. Consulate in Libya before the deadly terrorist attack there. But in the vice presidential debate Thursday night, Joe Biden seemed unaware.

“We weren’t told they wanted more security there,” the vice president asserted flatly. During a night in which Biden and Republican rival Paul Ryan both drifted from the facts on a range of domestic and foreign issues, that was a standout.

A look at some of their claims:

BIDEN: “Well, we weren’t told they wanted more security there. We did not know they wanted more security again. And by the way, at the time we were told exactly — we said exactly what the intelligence community told us that they knew. That was the assessment. And as the intelligence community changed their view, we made it clear they changed their view.” READ MORE

The debate began with a discussion on the terror attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

“It took the president two weeks to acknowledge that this was a terrorist attack,” Ryan claimed. He then criticized the Obama administration for “projecting weakness abroad.”

“What we are watching on our TV screens is the unraveling of the Obama foreign policy,” he added.

Biden, who smiled incredulously during Ryan’s comments, responded, “With all due respect, that’s a bunch of malarkey

WASHINGTON – All eyes were on Danville, Kentucky, Thursday, as Vice President Joe Biden and Paul Ryan – Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s running mate, faced off in one of the most anticipated vice presidential debates in years.  The debate focused on foreign and domestic policy, and was divided into nine time segments of approximately 10 minutes each    READ MORE

I think one of the most difficult things to do when you’re in a debate must be to keep your reactions in check while you’re not talking. Vice President Joe Biden was very animated Thursday night. I wonder if sometimes he isn’t mindful that he is always on camera during a debate, or maybe it’s just part of his technique.  READ MORE

____________

Danville, KY – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is playing a prominent role in the first and only debate between vice presidential candidates Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.

Ryan, running mate of GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, accused Biden and President Barack Obama of ignoring Netanyahu and giving Iran the time to forge ahead toward building a nuclear weapon. Biden dismissed him and said Obama’s met with “Bibi” dozens of times. Ryan’s accusations, Biden said, “is a bunch of stuff,” or “malarkey.

Vice President Biden and Paul Ryan came ready to rumble. And it showed.

The dueling running mates turned the lone vice presidential debate into an uncharacteristically feisty affair Thursday night, scrapping over everything from the economy to Libya to taxes.

The candidates interrupted each other. They talked over each other. Biden chuckled through many of Ryan’s responses. Ryan claimed his opponent was simply under “duress.”  The 90-minute session was a…..READ MORE

On Thursday night, vice president Joe Biden and congressman Paul Ryan sat at a semi-circular piece of corporate office furniture to debate various aspects of foreign and domestic policy. With moderator Martha Raddatz at the helm, the 90-minute conversation between the two contenders began fairly civilly, and grew increasingly snippy.

Those hoping for a few true wildman outbursts or gaffes from the easily lampooned Biden were disappointed. The vice president, however, grinning hugely, shaking his head and even giggling during some of his opponent’s answers, did seem exasperated with the much younger congressman for most of the debate.

Answering the moderator’s first question, about the recent terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, Biden, a former chairperson of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, promised that the Obama administration would “find and bring justice to the men” responsible for the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and the three other Americans killed during the attack.

Ryan came back with the claim that the president’s foreign policy is “making us less safe.” READ MORE

Newser) – Joe Biden must think Paul Ryan is hilarious, because he was constantly smiling, smirking, or laughing outright at his opponent during last night’s vice-presidential debate. It didn’t go unnoticed. Twitter lit up with posts about the smile strategy, Politico reports, and it even spawned two, count them two, Laughing Joe Biden accounts. Here were some of the more noteworthy tweets: READ MORE

NEW YORK (AP) — This time, they didn’t need Big Bird. Because really, who needed a “Sesame Street” character to grab all the post-debate attention when there was Joe Biden’s smile— or laugh, chuckle, grimace, grin, smirk, or “goofy face,” according to various descriptions?

Whether you loved or hated his performance — a decision that seemed to split (surprise!) along partisan lines — it was Biden who dominated the conversation during and after Thursday’s vice-presidential debate, with his animated facial reactions to almost anything his opponent, Paul Ryan, uttered.

The vice president also came up with the two catchiest phrases of the night — “bunch of malarkey” and “bunch of stuff” — both of them employed (and tweeted, and retweeted) to paint his Republican opponent as untruthful. READ MORE

ENGAGING, OR A TURNOFF:

While many found Biden’s grins infectious, some found them immature.

“That mugging, those condescending looks — it was a complete turnoff,” said body language expert Lillian Glass, author of the upcoming “Body Language Advantage.” ”He was bullying, he was smug, he interrupted … I think he lost a lot of his message based on facial gestures.”

Biden may have been deemed the winner by many, but “from a body language point of view, he did not win this debate,” she said.

Fox News host Sean Hannity, who tweeted, “Martha Raddatz is the worst moderator ever.” He and some others believed she was too quick to cut off Ryan and to let Biden talk over him.
